In recent years, a new internet architecture based on the publish/subscribe paradigm has been adopted by organizations such as the FP7 EU project PSIRP (Publish/Subscribe Internet Paradigm) and its follow on FP7 EU project PURSUIT (Publish/Subscribe Internet Technology). Furthermore, a publish/subscribe based zFilter forwarding node has been developed and implemented on the NetFPGA platform. The zFilter forwarding node replaces IP forwarding implementation with a bloom filter matching technique. In this study, it is described how as part of the FP7 EU project ECOnet, the zFilter forwarding node is investigated and its power consumption is compared with the that of the IP based reference router design under various traffic conditions. The major findings in the paper show that the zFilter forwarding node can consume 21.5%-26.15% less dynamic power than the IPv4 reference router while still maintaining a better performance in terms of throughput and packet loss.
