Motion search based on best zero-block detection criterion

In video coding schemes, t he motion estimation and transformation modules are the most computationally expen sive. The computational costs were reduced with a motion search algorithm using the best zero-block detection criterion. This algorithm exploits the fact that many residual blocks become zero after an integer transform and quantization in low bit rate video coding. A zero-block detection criterion is introduced to sp eed up the encoding process in motion searches combined with the H.26L seven block sizes INTER prediction mo de. Simulations showed that in contrast with the TML9.0 video coder, the propose d encoder dramatically reduces the search points. For a typical quantization par ameter of 12, the encoder can obtain 77% reduction in computations without loss of coding efficiency.
