Use of high-resolution 3-D surface data to monitor change over time on pavement surfaces: Research into pavement surface disintegration: Phase 3

This report focuses on the early detection of surface disintegration utilizing high-resolution 3D data collection. In the United Kingdom, roads are generally surfaced with Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) or thin surfacing materials. Since these different surfaces deteriorate in different ways and at different rates, it is desirable that a detecting method be able to reliably and efficiently provide condition data at a high level of detail for engineers to use in maintenance prioritization. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine whether a high-resolution stereo imaging system was able to measure in detail shape deterioration in a set of lab samples. In addition, this report developed new methods, utilizing global positioning systems (GPS), for aligning data from successive surveys to accurately calculate condition changes.
