Wireless Sensor Node Deployment Strategy in Hilly Terrains for Maximizing Area of Coverage

The placement of sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Network is one of the most challenging tasks. With a limited number of sensors in order to achieve maximum geographical area coverage especially on a hilly terrain surface. Placement of the sensor also related to the overall performance of the network. In this work, a Delaunay Triangulation based method is proposed to approximate the 3D surface from the randomly chosen surface sample points and a projection based method is proposed for optimal sensor deployment. The positions of the sensors were selected based on the maximum coverage. A divide and conquer approach was used to partition the surface and two ways of projection onto the surface were used to get the optimal sensor position for each partition. To ensure the coverage area, the problem of superposition and uncovered area were considered and results will be compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed sensor placement methods.
