Dynamic Mapping of Rotary Lip Seal Lubricant Films by Fluorescent Image Processing

In this paper the development of a new experimental method tailored to investigate the lubricant film in sealing contacts is presented and discussed in detail. This technology is based on a new 3-Dimensional mapping technique achieved by image processing the fluorescent emission induced in the oil film of the sealing contact. — In a first step, the equipment for calibration was designed and used to optimise the optical system and the concentration of fluorescent dye. — In a second step, the lubricant film under a radial seal lip and its correlation to shaft speed and friction torque were studied.
