Should Research Money Been Spent for Intrusive or Non-Intrusive End-Use Metering?

This paper describes the main elements of several end-use metering systems and an open, two way communication gateway system. It argues that information from intrusive as well as from non-intrusive end-use metering is needed. The developments in the energy distribution sector (two way communication and offering a wider range of services) are main factors in the process that determines whether intrusive metering will be in the future the better option than non-intrusive metering. As priorities has to been set, intrusive metering seems to have the best opportunities. In that case an international field experiment for a number of appliances in houses should start as soon as possible.
