Symbiotic Innovation: Getting the Most Out of Collaboration

In rapidly changing and complex global environments, some form of symbiotic innovation that ultimately benefits consumers is central to the success and growth of any enterprise, and it requires collaboration to thrive. Whether co-creation, open innovation, or customer-centricity, the interaction between and among multiple participants has been identified as an important part of the innovation process. In this chapter we consider a model of symbiotic innovation from a biological perspective and explore five types of collaboration that can be used to define a network to drive innovation. We stress the importance of network orchestration across the different types of collaboration and the critical role of a network orchestrator to manage symbiotic innovation.
