Geographical and Environmental Education in Albania

Drawing on a wide range of secondary and primary materials as well as personal experience of Albania dating from the 1970s to the present day, this paper describes and critically evaluates current geographical and environmental education in Albania in relation to three dimensions: (1) the changing nature of the curriculum over the past 20 years; (2) the impacts of successive phases of social and political upheaval on such educational processes; and (3) the extent to which current provision meets the contemporary needs of Albanian society and environment. A number of conclusions are drawn on the nature and appropriateness of the curriculum, its relationship to research, and concerning measures which can be taken both by Albanian authorities and support agencies.
