Optimum design of CO2 compression and pipeway transport system

Publisher Summary Injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) in depleted oil reservoirs is an important Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) method used worldwide. As CO2 sources are often far from oil reservoirs, its transport cost depends on that distance, the capacity, and the required pressure at oil well head. This chapter focuses on design optimization studies of CO2 transport systems for EOR applications, comprising compressors and pipeline. To obtain the proper information for the optimization studies, special attention is paid for CO2 transport properties, reliable estimate of investment, and energy price. The objective of CO2 transport system optimum design is to determine the pipe diameter and compressor size that leads to the minimum total cost of investment and energy consumption. To achieve this, several projects calculations were performed during the study for different pipe diameters. From this study, the optimum CO2 transport cost can be quickly calculated for several conditions using an equation obtained from the regression of the set of results.
