IT Solutions in Organizations

The chapter is describing the role of IT solutions in modern organizations. First of all, different typologies of information systems are presented and the new typology of IT solutions (based on their function in organization) is developed. It is based on 7 functions of IT solutions in organizations: information, communication, automation, coordination, integration, transformation and innovation. It allows to differ IT solutions in case of their information processing capacity and ability to cope with organizational change intensity and presented in this chapter. Second of all, IT solutions support for various management methods is discussed, including: Enterprise Resource Planning, Controlling, Customer Relationship Management, Business process reengineering, Lean Management, Business Continuity Management, Knowledge Management, Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, High Commitment Management and Competency based management. Based on that, the new typology of management methods in the context of their sensitivity for IT solutions support is presented. Management methods are divided into three groups: with low, mid and high sensitivity for IT solutions support, based on their need for this support in the process of implementation and continues use and improvement. Third of all, at the end of the chapter, the role of those IT solutions in generating value for organizations is discussed.
