Ein Rückzug als Vormarsch: zu Volkmar Siguschs Thesen zur Depathologisierung der Transsexualität

In two articles in Numbers 3 and 4 of this journal, Sigusch attempted to redefine the relationship between transsexuality and the medical world. The author offers his contribution to this debate. His main objection is that Sigusch fails to make a clear distinction between the social phenomenon of a sex change and the medical steps with which it is usually brought about in the 20th century. As a result genital surgery is seen as identical with sex changes, and those who seek a sex change identify this as a wish to be operated on.
