OCCURRENCE OF ENDOSYMBIOTIC BACTERIA IN MARINE DINOFLAGELLATES 1, 2

The marine dinoflagellates Gymnodinium splendens (photosynthetic) and Cryptothecodinium cohnii (heterotrophic) harbor abundant endosymbiotic bacterial floras. Some general observations are made on their characteristics, and on this symbiotic relationship in other protists.
