As contemporary living environments have changed, a tendency of consumers has also changed. When people shop, they expect not only good products but also resting spaces as cultural places. To support this new breed of consumer, it is important for department stores to change their disposition from a mere medium between consumers and goods to a cultural space that attracts people to visit and stay for longer. Since the cultural role of stores has become important, resting spaces in stores have become an important impact on the inflow of consumers. The more people come into the store, the more people would recognize the existence of these spaces, which directly influences on sales volume. This study took examples of two department stores in Tokyo and the top three stores in the volume of sales in Seoul. I have photo-recorded and investigated the resting places of the aforementioned stores, and created my checklist to be analyzed in regard to the eco-friendly elements. The study analyzes the existing conditions of the rest areas and suggests improvable green elements for ideal spaces. The final thesis in short is that involving natural features in a closed-space can create an atmosphere that is comfortable to shop in.
