Spectral decomposition illumination of reservoir facies

Although sequence stratigraphy studies at the architectural element scale have been conducted for years, delineation of lateral variability of stratigraphic sequences from seismic data is still challenging. Since spectral decomposition has been used for over a decade to delineate thin-bed features, we propose to use multiple spectral components to delineate architectural elements that fall at or below seismic resolution. While a great deal of work has been published on using spectral decomposition to qualitatively or quantitatively map bed thickness (e.g. Puryear and Castagna, 2008), few if any authors have addressed other depositional patterns.
