Bio)Chemical Sensors Based on Paper

In this chapter, the authors discuss the use of paper as a material in (bio)chemical sensing approaches. After providing a short historical overview, a general introduction into paper properties and the motivation for using paper in (bio)chemical sensors, specific examples of the application of paper as a material are discussed in more detail for systems relying on optical and electrochemical signal transduction. It is demonstrated that paper can be more than just a low cost substrate alternative on which to build up a (bio)chemical sensor. The chapter closes with a short outlook on future perspectives.
