Review of Wide Area PSS Control System and Its Engineering Application

The wide-area power system stabilizers(PSSs)control system based on wide-area measurement system(WAMS)is the most effective measure to solve the problem of inter-area oscillation. Its system architecture, input signals, selection of the position to perform the control, time delay and robustness of the control system, designing of the controller are deeply studied. It is pointed out that the analysis and modeling using nonlinear methods, especially Prony analysis, are suitable for complex power systems. The method of dominant mode ratio is adapted to the selection of the remote feedback signal, but the actual situation of the project must be considered. The eigen value method and its optimization algorithm can solve the delay stability domain of complex power systems. For delay treatment, time delay compensation methods are more easily achieved than that of delay insensitive robust control and the effect is better.Online adaptive parameter control can work better than that of off-line design because it can track changes of system. The hot points of future research have finally been described. Some problems confronted in actual application have been analyzed, such as real-time performance of algorithms, decision of system switching, mistake proofing logic, etc.
