“I Used to Dance, but I Don’t Dance Now”

Cette analyse des categories aspectuelles de l'anglais s'inscrit dans une perspective quantitative. L'A. se fixe l'objectif d'etudier de maniere systematique le comportement des formes linguistiques utilisees pour encoder le passe habituel en anglais a partir d'un large corpus de l'anglais parle contemporain. Le passe habituel est utilise pour exprimer une situation du monde reel qui a existe pendant une certaine periode temporelle mais qui n'existe plus. Trois formes sont employees : le preterit, la construction avec used to et celle avec would. L'A. examine 1) comment, dans quelle circonstance et pour quelle raison un locuteur privilegie l'une de ces trois formes, 2) leur distribution quantitative (en anglais parle), 3) les conditions qui regissent leur interchangeabilite. Ces resultats sont confrontes a ceux decrits dans les travaux anterieurs
