Solid Rocket Motor Optimization

A preliminary design of a solid rocket motor (SRM) is based on a multitude of design parameters (e.g., thrust profile, chamber pressure, burn time, etc.), whose values are difficult to determine initially, necessitating the design modeling and optimization for the specific mission. Complex internal and external parameters interconnections affect the SRM performance and impact on the rocket mission. In previous works the various physical models and solution methods were presented. This study presents the SRM optimization principles using a common launch vehicle. Twenty design parameters are optimized for a different mission's objectives. The various SRM design parameters, connections and influences on the mission optimization are examined and discussed.
