Compensation of Vestibular Lesions

Significant knowledge about vestibular functions was already available before the turn of the century. After the first investigations on the semicircular canals of the inner ear by Flourens (1824), Goltz (1870) initiated further research when he demonstrated the effects of labyrinthine injury in pigeons. The impressive clinical picture of Meniere’s disease has also caused several authors to direct their attention to labyrinthine physiology (e.g. Cyon, 1874; Bornhardt, 1876; Spamer, 1880; Lee, 1894, 1894–1895). Most of them sectioned or partially removed the membranous semicircular canals and thus gained some insight into labyrinthine pathophysiology. A comprehensive list of this early literature can be found in Ewald (1892).
