In the preface the author states that the aim of this book is to provide an understanding of the principles of auscultation of the heart for senior medical students and physicians. Following two most lucid introductory chapters on the physical principles of auscultation and design of apparatus, and the mechanism and timing of heart vibrations, there are individual chapters devoted to the first sound, second sound, systolic sounds, diastolic sounds, and three final chapters dealing with murmurs. All the text is exceptionally clear, easy to read and comprehensive.
