Vitiligo

V itiligo is an idiopathic, acquired cutaneous achromia characterized by ivory-white macules of different sizes and shapes, which tend to enlarge peripherally in the course of time.' Vitiligo is the commonest of all pigmentary disorders. At least 1 % of the world population is believed to be afflicted with it^; however, vitiligo is a major sociopsychological problem in the dark skinned races. Widespread prejudices, ignorance, taboos, lack of scientific appraisal, and confusion of vitiligo with leprosy all make it a social embarrassment for the patient in an orthodox society. Life expectancy is unaffected.^'"
