Due to industrializing society and global economic crisis, underprivileged social class has been spread extensively making the quality of life worse and increasing the burdens of the society and the government on the other hand. The purpose of this study is to suggest direction for future housing development by analyzing the remodeling project of the underprivileged residential area at Yeongdeungpo-gu District where high density shared housings called “Jjokbang”. As a research method, this study utilized literature survey and on-the-spot observation at the project site and their environments before and after the improvement were recorded and interviews with the local residents and service suppliers were made. The research results revealed that interior environments were improved partially but their level of improvement basically did not satisfy the absolute standards of living environments and their rent was very high in consideration of their residential spaces, because of highly concentrated donation from all of the nation. These phenomena weaken the residents’ will for autonomous life. This concentration have made dispersed underprivileged residents lack of support of which can alleviate their poor condition. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an holistic support system including a class-specific housing model which can improve living conditions for the poor class in both concentrated area and other scattered areas.
