Abstract The authors propose a new power consolidation-inversion system for the Faraday type MHD generator using a PWM inverter. The d.c. output powers of the MHD generator are, at first, inverted by voltage source PWM inverters and then consolidated by transformers. The proposed system does not need the expensive equipment of the a.c. filter and the phase modifier and can control the active power from the generator to the electric power system without generating the reactive power. It is confirmed by the numerical simulation of the system, including the Faraday type MHD generator, PWM inverters and transformers, that the proposed power consolidation-inversion system can stably and steadily transmit and control the electric power from the MHD generator to the electric power system. It is also confirmed that the proposed system can be used as a fast active power controller.
