New Chemical Abstracts Service director named

Robert J. Massie has been appointed director of the Chemical Abstracts Service division of the American Chemical Society, effective July 1. He will report to ACS executive director John K Crum. Massie has been president and chief executive officer of Gale Research, a Detroit, Mich., publisher of reference books and directories with current annual sales of about $75 million and a work force of about 500, since 1990. Gale is a wholly owned subsidiary of Thomson Corp., a Toronto-based media and information company. Prior to joining Gale, Massie held several positions with Harlequin Enterprises, a subsidiary of Torstar, a billiondollar Canadian media company. Harlequin is a $330 million-per-year trade book publisher and direct marketing company. In 1989 Massie became executive vice president of the Harlequin North American Direct Marketing Division.
