Sizing of energy storage systems to enhance microgrid reliability

Optimal sizing and operation of an energy storage system is important for economical and operational reasons. Oversized energy storage systems introduce high capital costs while undersized energy storage systems cannot satisfy the power demand in a microgrid. In addition, the reliability of the microgrid system must be high enough to perform the intended function during the specified time-period at the minimum cost. An optimal sized energy storage system that is economical and effectively operational with high reliability will be reached through an optimization technique which is the dynamic programming (DP) method. Suggestions to enhance the reliability of microgrids including energy storage systems are proposed as well as the effects of energy storage systems on the reliability of microgrids. This research aims to improve the technology of renewable sources and microgrids which will result in a greener environment and a more economic society.
