VORTEX TUBE AIR SEPARATION APPLICATIONS FOR AIR COLLECTION CYCLE HYPERSONIC VEHICLES

Since 1998, MSE Technology Applications, Inc. (MSE) has worked on the characterization of the vortex tube (VT). During this period, the effects of operational parameters such as mass flow, pressure, vapor quality, and enriched air fraction have been successfully quantified. A few geometric parameters like nozzle and diaphragm sizes have been examined, as well as other enhancements such as product recycle and electrostatic charge application. The first part of this paper reports on the test results completed to date, the remaining unknown factors, and the focus of future research for VT air separation. The second part is to review the VT air separation process. The last part of the paper is to review the Liquid Air Collection Engine (LACE) and proposed further research for an Air Collection Cycle engine integrated with a VT air separation system.
