Selkirk (i986) advances a theory, henceforth referred to as the endbased theory, whereby syntactic conditions on phonological rules are expressed indirectly in terms of prosodic constituents. These constituents are constructed by parsing an utterance into substrings terminated by the right or left edge of some syntactic projection al.. For example, in Chi Mwi:ni, sequences terminated at the right by xmax are mapped onto phonological phrases as follows (Selkirk I986: 390):
