Posterior subcapsular cataract formation associated with multiple lumbar epidural corticosteroid injections.

E pidural steroid injections are an established treatment for back pain secondary to herniated disk, although the efficacy of this procedure is still controversial (1). Therapeutic effects may include reductions in nerve root inflammation and in C fiber nociceptive input (2). Although epidural steroid injections are considered relatively safe (3), possible complications include dural puncture, postdural puncture headache, dural cutaneous fistulae, epidural abscess, aseptic meningitis, chronic suppression of adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol plasma levels, and iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome (4). We report a case of bilateral cataract formation in association with multiple epidural steroid injections.
