Real-time traffic measurements in a differentiated services network

This paper presents results from delay measurements in a test network that can be operated as an ordinary best-effort or as a differentiated services capable network. The differentiated services features were implemented according to the simple integrated media access (SIMA) model in the network nodes. Delays of several constant and variable bit rate UDP flows were measured with and without generated background load. The aim was to find out what kind of QoS the implemented SIMA model and DiffServ architecture in general can provide for real-time streams. The results of these measurements clearly show the power of this mechanism, especially under the overload situation.
