HPTLC Method for Determination of Acteoside in Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.)

Asensitive thin layer chromatographic method has been established for quantification of acteoside in the leaves of Plantago lanceolata. Chromatographic separation was performed on silica gel HPTLC plates with ethyl acetate—formic acid—water, 18 + 1 + 1 (v/v), as mobile phase. The plates were scanned densitometrically at λ= 334 nm. The method was validated for precision, repeatability, and accuracy. It was found to be precise—intra-day and inter-day RSD were 0.58 and 2.0%, respectively. Instrumental precision and repeatability of the method were found to be 0.62 and 1.5 (%CV), respectively. The accuracy was checked by studying recovery at three levels; average recovery was 102.3%. The method was used for estimation of acteoside in the leaves of Plantago lanceolata and was confirmed to be suitable for the determination of these compounds in the drug.
