The Optical and Modulation Transfer Functions Working Group has been concerned with updating Section 6 of "Procedures for Calibrating Photogrammetric Cameras and Related Optical Tests." As presently proposed, it is expanded to include guidelines for MTF analysis techniques of camera systems. The revision is printed in full. The status of OTF/MTF standards in various nations is reviewed, and there is a report of current testing results performed by the SIRA group on a photogrammetric wide-field lens which shows good correlation among laboratories. The application of the MTF technique in the analysis of aerial and space photography has proved a reliable evaluation of the quality of operational systems when control targets are lacking. The results are reported. A study by the U.S. Air Force shows the reliability and feasibility of employing edge gradient techniques in control of performance of aerial photographic systems. This working group report also contains a short summary of current papers and meetings on the subject of image quality using OTF and MTF evaluation techniques, and makes recommendations for further study.
