Massive optical interconnections for computer applications

The performance of advanced multiprocessor architectures of the future will be governed by the bandwidth and configuration of the communication channels. This is especially true for systems that must handle knowledge processing and high-level image processing tasks where massive numbers of global interconnections can lead to greatly enhanced performance. Optics and optoelectronics have an important role to play in alleviating the communication bottleneck in these systems. This paper describes concepts for massively parallel optically interconnected computers.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
