The effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis- A randomised controlled trial

Introduction: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), is an established intervention in patients with COPD. Its utility in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) is unclear and based on limited studies. Aim: To determine efficacy of PR program in patients with NCFB. Methods: NCFB patients who had at least 2 exacerbations in 1 year and mMRC score ≥2 were recruited. Baseline evaluation was done which included 6 minute walk distance (6MWD), CPET (VO2 max), spirometry, quality of life (using the SGRQ and LCQ), depression, anxiety and stress assessment (using the DASS scale). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either PR in addition to standard care (Intervention) or standard care alone (Control) and were reassessed after 8 weeks. Results: 60 patients were randomized: 31 to intervention and 29 to control arm. 18 dropped out; 11 from intervention and 7 from control arm. The VO2 max and 6MWD increased in intervention arm by an additional 81.7ml/min (p=0.006) and 36.9m (p Conclusions: PR provides significant benefits in NCFB and should be part of routine care.
