Monte Carlo simulations of Large-Scale Storage impact in Distribution Network

Increasing amount of decentralized renewable energy sources, transition towards smart grids and implementation of new technologies bring additional challenges in secure and stable operation of electricity network. Energy storage brings new challenges and solutions to the stable grid operation, which is affected by all new actors and technologies. Different kind of energy storage systems, which vary in scale and technology, are subject of research within EU project STORY.In addition to pilot site demonstration cases of storage implementations, one of the aims was also evaluating the impact of the storage technologies at large scale. In simulations, we performed analysis and investigate impact of the large-scale storage on the distribution network. Simulation test grid models include Medium (MV) and Low voltage (LV) networks, where urban and rural settings were considered together with industrial and residential type of end users. Grid operation was evaluated through technical parameters and Key Performance indicators (KPIs), which showed positive impact of storage technologies in smart grid transition of the power systems.
