Similarity, Dissimilarity, and Distance Measure

Many coefficients exist that give measures of resemblance between a pair of cases, or samples, as opposed to association between pairs of variables; others measure resemblance between a pair of populations. Some are based on quantitative variables, some on categorical variables that may be dichotomous or ordered, and others on a mixture of both types.
