Comparison of Multi-Probe and Phased Array Girth Weld Inspection Systems

This paper presents the results of ultrasonic phased array field trials that were performed on the Maritimes and North East Pipeline 30 inch pipeline project during the summer of 1999 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of using this new technology for inspection of pipeline girth welds. The direct comparison between the two systems showed that the phased array system had equal, or better sensitivity to the multi-probe system in determining the length and vertical extent of the indications. The phased array system detected all of the same indications as the multi-probe system, was inherently more reliable due to less moving parts, and demonstrated much faster switch over times for different configurations.Copyright © 2000 by ASME
