Rapid advances in software and hardware have provided the capability to develop very complex systems that have highly interrelated components. This paper addresses issues related to human factors underpinnings of system evaluation. To accomplish that goal, two general areas are specifically addressed. The first area addressed is the basic philosophical underpinnings of verification, validation, and certification. The second is a simple description of the basic behavioral science statistical methods. The goal is to provide a very basic understanding of the interpretation of results using those tools.
