Performance of cationic β‐cyclodextrin as a clay stabilizer for use in enhanced oil recovery

In this study, a novel cationic cyclodextrin polymer was prepared by the polymerization reaction between allyl-β-cyclodextrin (A-β-CD) and acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), and diallyl benzyl propyl ammonium chloride (DABPAC) (A-β-CD/AM/AA/DABPAC). The cationic β-cyclodextrin polymer was structurally characterized using FTIR and 1H NMR. On bases of XRD and SEM analyses, the possibility of interaction between polymer and clay surfaces was suggested. The layer formed around the clay surfaces apparently performed as a double protective layer preventing clay swelling and its molecular migration.
