Thispaperpresents aFMCW radar system forhighprecision three-dimensional object posi- tion tracking. Theoretical analyses ofthe3-Dtriangula- tion concept andtheaccuracy lmits aregiven. Three 2.45GHzradar modules measure thedistance fromdif- ferent spatial locations toan active reflector unit installed ontheobject tobelocalised. Bymodulating theradarsignal intheactive reflector unit, disturbing echoes andclutter noise aresuppressed. Anadvanced signal processing concept evaluates thedifference of frequency andphasetenns oftwoadjacent modulation components. Testmeasurements demonstrate a 3-D position measurement withsubmillimetre precision. Thisperformance makesthenewapproach suitable for a widerangeofapplications inrobotics, industrial automation andinthemedical area.
