Modeling saturated induction motors

An extensive research activity has been devoted to the problem of controlling induction motors control over the last decade. Most of the proposed controllers have been designed using the standard model (obtained assuming the motor magnetic characteristic to be linear). Since such a characteristic is nonlinear in practice, especially for high power machines, the expected controller performances may not be achieved. A new control model is developed, for uniform air-gap AC machines, to appropriately account for the saturation feature of the magnetic characteristic. Such a new model is built-up starting from the relevant basic electrical laws. As a consequence of the saturation phenomenon, the new model parameters turn out to be state-dependent. Experimental validation of the constructed model is successfully performed using a real 7.5 kW machine.
