Computer Simulation of the Packing of Disks

The packing of disks has been investigated by computer simulation involving the use of three simulation algorithms: deposition under gravity, random sequential adsorption, and Mason's algorithm, facilitated by the Delaunay simplex subdivision. It is found that the pore characteristics are dependent on the simulation method. Studies of the binary packing suggests that the pore size and shape characteristics are strongly affected by disk size distribution. In general, increasing the size difference between the two components increases the types of pores and gives a more complicated pore structure. Increasing the amount of small disks results in an increase in the number of small and non-circular pores.
