Packaged cogeneration systems for commercial and multifamily applications

The benefits of natural gas fueled cogeneration are discussed. The PURPA of 1978 granted cogenerators the right to interconnect with the electric utility grid and to contract for backup power at nondiscriminatory rates. Large industrial process heat applications are the most common cogeneration installations as a result. Yet commercial and multifamily residential applications, though they will need to operate at 4000 full load equivalent hours, are possible. Two hypothetical installations show that higher electricity rates and more flexible payback requirements make such applications attractive. The GRI is supporting a program aimed at advancing cogeneration for commercial and multifamily units. Martin Cogeneration Systems Inc. is studying cogeneration for hospitals as well.
