RELIABILITY OF TRANSPORT NETWORKS. CHAPTER 6. PROBABILISTIC ROUTING AND SCHEDULING OF URBAN PICKUP/DELIVERY TRUCKS WITH VARIABLE TRAVEL TIMES

A probabilistic vehicle routing and scheduling model that incorporates variation in travel times is described. Dynamic traffic simulation was used to update the distribution of travel times. The model was applied to a test road network using 10 different freight carriers and data for the Kobe and Osaka areas of Japan. The results indicated that the total cost due to congestion decreased by 13.1% and total travel time due to congestion decreased by 9% using a probabilistic vehicle routing and scheduling model with variable travel times compared with a forecast model.
