Design of an adaptive control constraint system for end-milling operations

Abstract Adaptive control is being developed more and more in material-removal processes due to its great potential in increasing productivity. In this paper, a new adaptive fuzzy control system to maintain a constant cutting force under varying cutting conditions is developed. The proposed control system not only uses linguistic rule-based knowledge obtained from end-milling operations but also applies a numerical adaptive algorithm to tune the output gain of the fuzzy controller. Experiments show that the adaptive fuzzy control system can significantly improve cutting performance in end-milling operations.
