Stepping out of the house - participatory design with wide audience

Information systems traditionally confined to organizational context are reaching ever-wider audiences and user segments, especially as the development of information and communication technologies proceeds. In addition to users, also the use contexts and contents are changing and becoming mobile, introducing a new and more flexible and changing information environment. As a result, information systems design faces a growing pressure to meet the new challenges. In this paper we suggest a consumer oriented approach of ISD to support the development of information systems for diverse users and multiple use situations. The suggested approach is based on Contextual Design methodology that originates from Participatory Design, and is extended with an inclusion of consumers' perspective. The aim of the suggested new design orientation is to enhance the development of wide audience information systems.
