Energy efficiency enabled by power electronics

In this paper we introduce the challenging situation in worldwide carbon emission and resulting global warming. The regional consumption of electricity and technologies for electricity production are presented. We discuss the concrete saving potential by use of innovative electronics along the electric supply chain. Power saving potential at the point of electricity generation, the transmission over large distances, smart metering and energy efficient consumption are discussed. Finally, the different power devices are described and their different properties highlighted.
