The Albion Mill Foundations

Synopsis The Albion Mill was built near Blackfriars Bridge, London, in the years 1783–86. This Paper gives details of the structure and its foundations, and a summary of its history, based on original letters and drawings. A short biography is also given of the designer and builder, Samuel Wyatt. The mill was seven storeys high, founded on a raft 160 × 120 ft in plan resting on the Thames alluvium at an average depth of about 9 ft below ground level. The weight of excavated earth amounted to approximately 50% of the gross foundation pressure (c. 1·0 ton/sq. ft). This is an important and early example of a partially buoyant raft foundation.
