An investigation on neuroglial interaction effect on Izhikevich neuron behaviour

Astrocyte is a subtype of glial cells which is responsible for regulating the synaptic transmission of neuronal networks. Astrocytes provide a proper feedback control in regulating the neural activities. Among the glial cells, astrocytes play a vital role in the tripartite synapsis. In this paper we used a computationally efficient model to study of neuroglial interactions. The neuroglial interactions were simulated by implementation of Postnov astro-cyte and Izhikevich neuron models. These interactions, connect subunits of tripartite synapse which includes presynaptic neuron, synaptic terminal, postsynaptic neuron and a glial cell. The glial cell can be activated via two pathways: the fast increase of intercellular [K+] produced by spiking activity of postsynaptic neuron and the slow production of a mediator which is triggered by the synaptic activity.
