South of the Thames

South of the Thames covers a large area. Surprisingly, there is a comparatively low density of good contemporary architecture to see. However, there are some outstanding examples of architectural brilliance in the area. This chapter describes the architectural designs of some important buildings located at the south of the Thames that witness the skill and excellence of the architects. Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Community Centre, Foster Offices, Bricklayer's Arms, Doctor's Surgery, Vining Street housing, Strathleven Street housing, and Carlshalton Theatre are some examples of the buildings located at the south of the Thames with architectural superiority. Carlshalton Theatre is cultural and professional rather than physical, but this might just be the real thing: thick architecture, worth travelling out to south London to see. Bricklayer's Arms ranks as one of the better examples of industrial/warehousing development in London. Vining Street housing and Strathleven & Mauleverer Road housing are two housing association schemes by the practice of MacCormac Jamieson and Prichard. These two housing association schemes bear witness to the skill of the architects and are good examples of considered urban infill that integrates and repairs the existing fabric.
