Philadelphia: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins ISBN 0‐7817‐3445‐2 The first two editions of the Atlas were edited by Janet Stockard‐Pope, Sarah Werner and Reginald Bickford. The first, produced in 1977, was really the first book of its kind. It was an invaluable aid to those dealing with the difficult and fascinating records produced when studying neonates. The second edition, produced in 1992, included a large section on evoked potentials but in other ways had not materially altered. Much of the text and the great majority of the illustrations were the same. This third edition is essentially a complete rewrite of the book. The chapters are differently titled and the text and illustrations all new. Whereas in earlier editions an opening chapter on ‘Recording the neonatal electroencephalogram’ had covered all aspects, including the detection of artefacts, three chapters are dedicated to this subject in …
